Determining the value of postage stamps.

Determining the value of postage stamps.

To read

How is the value of stamps, letters and FDCs determined?

The value of stamps is determined by various factors, depending on whether they are postage stamps (for actual mail) or collector’s stamps (for philately). Here are a few factors that play a role:

1. Face value.

    • For postage stamps, the face value indicates the price of the stamp for sending a letter or parcel. It is usually set by the post office and varies depending on the country, the weight of the mail and the destination.

2. Rarity.

    • Rarity plays a crucial role in the field of stamp collecting. The fewer copies available, the higher their value. For example, stamps with printing errors or limited editions can be very valuable.

    • So be sure to check the print run.

3. Age.

    • Old stamps are often more valuable because they are harder to find, especially if they are well preserved.

4. Condition.

    • The physical condition of the stamp is very important. A stamp without tears, discolouration or missing perforations is generally more valuable.

5. Historical and cultural significance.

    • Stamps depicting important events, figures or periods may be of interest to collectors.

6. Supply and demand.

    • The market largely determines the value, based on the stamp’s popularity among collectors and its availability.
