A maximum card is a picture postcard with a (stamped) stamp on the face that is related to the image of the card. It is the intention that the stamping (place, date and theme of the stamp) is also related to this. The term maximum card refers to the maximum correlation between picture postcard, stamp and stamp. This term was already used around 1930. The hobby and collection of maximum cards is called maximaphilia.

Trappist beers on postage stamp.

The history of the monasteries of the Trappists and their beers form a guideline in this thematic collection entitled:

TRAPPIST TAPPED AND DISPLAYED – From Rule to Recipe.
Trappist beer, also known as Trappist, is brewed by Trappists, or monks of the Cistercian order. It may only bear the name “Trappist” if the beer is produced within the walls or in the vicinity of an abbey. The name “Trappist” derives from La Trappe, one of the founding abbeys of the Trappist order in France1. In short, Trappist beer is not a specific type of beer, but rather a description of the origin of the beer. Currently, there are ten recognized Trappist breweries worldwide that are allowed to carry the “Authentic Trappist Product” label with their beers.
The Cistercians, also known as schieringers or schiere monks, formed an influential monastic order dating back to the 11th century. Their history is fascinating and includes not only spiritual practices but also craft activities such as beer brewing.
  • In 1098, a group of monks separated from the Benedictines and formed the Cistercian order.
  • Their first monastery, Cîteaux in Burgundy, gave the name to this order.
The Cistercians followed the Rule of St. Benedict and emphasized “ora et labora” (praying and working).
They spread across Europe and became known for their self-sufficient lifestyle.
  • Around 820, beer brewing in monasteries is mentioned for the first time. The monks had malt houses and breweries.
  • Especially the Trappists, a stricter branch of the Cistercians, devoted themselves to brewing beer. They wanted to be self-sufficient and share the income with other abbeys and charities.
  • Trappist beer is brewed by monks of the Cistercian order. There are only eleven recognized Trappist breweries worldwide.
